The Groggy Squirrel 24 August 2006 - Julia Hay

The Spiegel Tent must be one the most beautiful and unique venues ever. When I left I was expecting to step outside next to the Arts Centre in Melbourne, but instead I was in the Scotland!

Ali McGregor’s Opera Burlesque is a must see for anybody as it takes a slice from every field, be it opera, comedy or just down right silly!

McGregor takes to the stage with Jacqueline Tate and Catherine Friel in beautiful elaborate costumes. The girls were accompanied by piano accordionist Phil McCloud and there was the occasional appearance from Captain Frodo on the saw. This extremely professional musical ensemble is nothing short of amazing.

The show started off with beautiful solos from the each of the girls, and then onto an outstanding version of Mikado’s Three Little Maids From School Are We. Just when you thought this sensible tone was going to be set for the entire show it digresses into more obscured novelty songs and a Radiohead cover.

The amount of passion and precision in these girls voice is outstanding. Just watch out for and explosive ukulele finale.

With an increase interest for the show more have been announced- check out www.edfringe.com or the show’s myspace
