Ali McGregor's Late-Nite Variety-Nite Night

@ The Melborune International Comedy Festival 2008
The Age 4stars

“Ali McGregor has taken up a late night residence at Federation Square. And it's a blast” Rating: 4 stars

Armed with her autoharp and the most wayward mien this side of Puccini, turncoat soprano Ali McGregor is suited to the smaller hours.

With her most unsavoury friends, she has taken up a late night residence at Federation Square. And it's a blast. The only real problem here is the brevity of her season.

McGregor, who nearly always looks like an inmate from a Home for Wayward China Dolls, is a generous performer. Her talents as an MC are shared with the amiably offensive Asher Tevelean. Fringe comedy nerds may recall Tevelean's turn a festival or two ago in Wild Duck. As Saxon, Ali's Comedy Butler, he's just as absurd, a lot more ornery and perfectly engaging.

Depending on one's luck, any performer from the festival might hop aboard McGregor's cheeky carousel. This sparkling compendium may lack in dates.

It balances this economy, however, with quality. And partial nudity, offensive tricks and gorgeous song. - Helen Razor
